Magnum and World Press Photo Foundation Partner For Square Print Sale

The latest edition of the sale spotlights real photographs, as opposed to AI-generated images.

Magnum Photos is partnering with the World Press Photo Foundation for their upcoming Square Print Sale, dubbed “Written by Light.” Following both the excitement and the hysteria surrounding artificial intelligence, the initiative was made to celebrate photographers worldwide, by spotlighting the practice of taking real photographs, as opposed to AI-generated images.

The sale will feature more than 100 images from over 75 Magnum photographers and estates, including 30 World Press Photo awarded photographers, who highlight the intricacies of their process. “Through this curation, we want to pay tribute and celebrate what really makes our photographs different from an artificially-generated image,” said Magnum president Cristina de Middel in a statement.

“As photographers, we were all, at some point, seduced by light and the possibilities of capturing it in our own unique way. The time feels right to go back to our roots in the practice and reflect on the very origins of our photographic practice, to the camera obscura, and how an image is recorded by the impact of light on a surface.”

Photographers include Martin Parr, Christina de Middel, Francis Perez, Fatima Shbair, and many more. Each photograph will be available to purchase a limited-edition 6 x 6” print during the Square Print Sale, which runs from October 16 to 22.

Elsewhere, Harmony Korine presents his infrared dystopia at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles.
