Daniel Arsham Collaborates with Mattel for Limited-Edition Hot Wheels Collection

Releasing in four stages called “Laps,” with the first featuring the artist’s Porsche 930 Turbo and more.

Mattel Creations has revealed a four-part Hot Wheels collaboration with artist Daniel Arsham, a project two years in the making, to be released in four different phases called “Laps.” Across these four laps, Arsham will reimagine eight different Hot Wheels models, at the 1:64 scale, as well as add his touch to a variety of other collectibles and accessories.

The collection’s first lap notably features an eroded version of the artist’s Porsche 930 Turbo and a crystalized eroded version of the Rodger Dodger, a modified 1973 Dodge Charger SE with a blown V8 engine emerging from the hood.

Arsham’s instantly recognizable approach can also be found on a range of other items, including an eroded Super Rally Case that acts as a centerpiece of the collection and has one slot for each of the cars in the collection — design inspirations for this piece are notably drawn from the original 1968 Hot Wheels Rally Case.

Speaking to the creation process, Arsham shared “Mattel Creations developed creative ways to deliver my vision by thinking outside of the box and experimenting with new materials and processes,” adding “This is the first time Silkstone has been used on a Hot Wheels model, and my first time working with this material, making it a historic moment for both of us.”

Ted Wu the Vice President and Global Head of Design for Vehicles at Mattel added: “Over the two-year collaboration, it was a unique design challenge to bring Daniel’s iconic aesthetic to Hot Wheels scale and the result is something we believe both Arsham and Hot Wheels fans will love.”

The Mattel Creations x Daniel Arsham Hot Wheels collection, including a selection of accessories like keychains, stickers and limited edition prints will be available starting October 27 at 9:00 AM PST on Mattel Creations’ official site. For those based in New York, a publicly accessible first-look event will be taking place from October 21 to 22 — with Arsham said to be in attendance on the opening day.
