NANZUKA Features Joint Exhibition by Jean and Nicholas Jullien

On view in Tokyo until November.

Much has been written about French artist Jean Jullien. His brother Nicholas, however, is still under the radar. Known for creating electronic music in a wide range of applications, including music videos and immersive installations, Nicholas has been at work on a new series of wooden sculptures that are equally as playful as his brother’s whimsical paintings.

Following Jean’s 2021 show at NANZUKA, the Tokyo-based gallery has unveiled a new joint exhibition by the Jullien brothers that transports you to their hometown of Reconil, Brittany. The Gathering takes its title from the popular fantasy card game Magic: The Gathering, which the two played growing up and alludes to the magic they’d experience on a daily basis.

The first floor is dedicated to new paintings by Jean, featuring breezy beach scenes from Reconil, as well as his recent escapades in Tokyo, where he creates a fictional story surrounding his largely featureless subjects. On the second floor, Nicholas’ anthropomorphic sculptures are humorous and slightly grotesque, which are complemented by an eerie soundscape he created for the occasion.

“Jean’s pure creativity instills Nicolas’ sculptures with a sense of narrative and time,” wrote the gallery. “Their free and elegant ideas, which instantly capture our hearts and continue to entice us, seem to be a powerful testament to the wonders of creative activity.”

The Gathering will be on view at NANZUKA UNDERGROUND, NANZUKA 2G, and 3110NZ by LDH kitchen until November 12, November 5, and November 4, respectively.
