Claire Tabouret and Pierre Yovanovitch Collaborate on New Asymmetry Armchairs

To celebrate 10 years of friendship and creativity.

French artist Claire Tabouret has worked with longtime friend and collaborator, designer Pierre Yovanovitch, to celebrate 10 years of the Asymmetry armchair. Deceptively simple, the chair features a whimsical form that is rigorously hand-made by les Ateliers Jouffre in Lyon and doubles as a sculptural object.

There is something innately youthful about Yovanovitch’s work. “To be 10 is to be in the realm of childhood,” the French designer reflects on the milestone, “a theme that strongly resonates in Claire Tabouret’s work and indirectly in my own, where it serves as a counterbalance to the seriousness I often seek to break free from.” For the collaboration, Tabouret hand-painted a selection of Asymmetry armchairs upholstered in a variety of colors, such as muted pinks, slate blue, and brown.

“I wanted to work with the theme of kites,” mused Tabouret. “When looking at the armchair, something strikes me — it reminds me of origami work, the filing work and the apparent lines, its shape that is both embracing and light.” Made in collaboration with artisans from the 18th century maison, Manufacture Royale Bonvallet, the woolen fabric covering the chair is complemented by satin material for the kites featuring hand-painted children that are delicately sewn together by Caraco Workshop.

At the core of the collaboration is a symbol of “fragility, beauty and freedom,” adds Yovanovitch. Check out the exhibition until October 28 at the new Pierre Yovanovitch Mobilier in Paris.
