Gagosian Spotlights ‘The Art of the Olympics'

A new two-part exhibition on view in Paris.

In the run up to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Gagosian will spotlight the art of the Games in a new exhibition at its Rue de Castiglione location. The two-part show is produced in conjunction with the Olympic Museum and will comprise of rare archival works from Christo, Takashi Murakami and more.

Standouts on the first floor include Andreas Gursky’s photograph Amsterdam, Arena I (2000), which depicts a soccer field overhead, where the players and shapes of the pitch resemble that of an abstract painting. Jonas Wood similarly maps out the ridges, greens and bunkers of a golf course in his super-flat aesthetic. There will also be a selection of work from the late Christo, whose Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped (1961–2021) was finally realized in 2021, as well as sculptures and paintings by Keith Haring and Man Ray, amongst others.

Further up into the gallery and visitors will be able to take a stroll down memory lane through a showcase of Olympic posters. Perhaps more than any other sporting event, the Olympics has a rich history of collaborating with some of the biggest artists over the past century. Highlights on view will include David Hockney’s 1972 swimming pool composition for the 1972 Munich Games, Robert Rauschenberg’s fragmented Star in Motion collage for Los Angeles ‘82, as well as Rachel Whiteread’s vibrant reinterpretation of the Olympic rings for the London Games in 2012.

“I don’t think an exhibition like this has ever been done before, so we’re excited to be showing this in Paris,” said Gagosian director Serena Cattaneo Adorno in a statement.

The Art of the Olympics will be on view in Paris until September 7, 2024. A portion of the proceeds from the show will benefit the Olympic Refuge Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which aims to support the protection and development of displaced youth worldwide through the power of sport.
