Antwaun Sargent to Present Two-Part Exhibition at Gagosian Beverly Hills and Hong Kong

Featuring works by Theaster Gates, Lauren Halsey, Amanda Williams and more.

Gagosian will soon play host to a new group exhibition featuring an intergenerational cast of Black artists who probe into the intersection of social consciousness through nonrepresentational forms. Curated by Antwaun Sargent, Social Abstraction is a two-part show in Beverly Hills and Hong Kong which will bring together a star studded lineup of work from the likes of Lauren Halsey, Theaster Gates, Amanda Williams and more.

Each artist dissects perception of city and self through traditional materials, such as oil and acrylic paints, as well as unusual modes of expression, from hair glue, resins to wigs. Lauren Halsey, who is working on opening a sculpture park in South Central in 2026, created a relief using synthetic hair that billows down to the floor to exude a sense of power; whereas, for Kevin Beasley, the American artist blends raw cotton and garments with resin, resulting in vibrant textured compositions that act as a form of personal expression and shared history.

To complement the exhibition, a special performance by Kyle Abraham and his company A.I.M. will take place at the gallery during opening day, along with a zine that will supplement Gagosian Quarterly specially curated by Sargent. Social Abstraction will open at Gagosian Beverly Hills on July 18 and run through August 30, 2024.
