Tate Britain x Palace Skateboards Inspired by John Martin

From its hallmark Penrose triangle logo, originally developed by Oscar Reutersvärd in the early 20th century, to its dedication to vintage VHS filming methods, Palace Skateboards has always demonstrated a fondness of the past. Lev Tanju, the creative driving force behind the brand, sourced the archives of Tate Britain for a new range of decks. Inspired by John Martin – the English Romantic-era painter – Tanju projected images of Martin’s The Great Day of his Wrath across a series of busts, using the resulting photographs as graphics. Ultimately, the graphics fit well with Palace’s faded, old motifs, and integrate somewhat obscured art in a smart new way. Enjoy more information on the creative process below, and if in London, look for the boards to go on display at Warp Late at Tate on December 6.
