During Art Week in Hong Kong, the Fringe Club hosted the inaugural edition of Supper Club. Led by Alex Chan from THE SHOPHOUSE alongside Willem Molesworth and Ysabelle Cheung from the PHD Group, the trio unveiled the week-long event that functioned as a hybrid between a hub, art fair and a place to gather for contemporary art lovers. The event took place inside Fringe Club’s contemporary art space, a Victorian eclectic-style Grade 1 heritage building tucked away on Lower Albert Road.

The mission of the Supper Club is to disrupt the rigidity in conventional art fairs by offering an alternative experience for socializing, viewing, buying and selling art. The space has been adapted by BEAU Architects into a series of interconnected rooms, which provide a wander and linger throughout Supper Club’s late-night operating hours.

Various experiences were planned for every day of the week-long event, spanning panel talks in the form of happy hour to innovative live art performances by budding artists. Throughout the interconnected spaces, a myriad of artworks are scattered in a cozy and eclectic setting. From sculptures, paintings, sketches and animation to performances, the Supper Club showcased art from 20 international and regional galleries.

Ysabelle Cheung noted that the concept derived from similar events that they’ve seen in Basel and Seoul. Her co-founder, Willem Molesworth highlighted the intention for Supper Club was to fill a void that was missing from the city’s art scene, thus offering a place to showcase “the region’s up and coming artists that embraces the generative, interconnected dialogues” while “shaping the larger creative ecosystem.” THE SHOPHOUSE’s founder, Alex Chan also explained that they had hoped to bring forth “a new mode of interacting with art” with the event’s debut.
