Sotheby’s Celebrates 50th Anniversary in Asia with New Hong Kong Flagship

The new space will host exhibition tours and expert-led workshops as well as Sotheby’s biannual auctions.

In 1973, Sotheby’s opened its first outpost in Asia, setting a precedent and establishing the first international auction house in the region. Now, over 50 years later, Sotheby’s continues championing the region’s influence on fine art and luxury objects by announcing a new space in Hong Kong.

Since its inception in 1744, Sotheby’s has built a reputation for selling rare collectibles that have defined pop culture. Recently, Sotheby’s auctioned off Lionel Messi’s 2022 FIFA World Cup jersey and Lewis Hamilton’s first Mercedes-Benz F1 car. Earlier this year, Sotheby’s broke auction records by selling a complete set of Michael Jordan’s championship sneakers for $8 million USD.

This expansion signals a new era for the luxury auction house, which also has galleries in New York, London, and Buenos Aires. Set to arrive in July 2024, the new flagship will span 24,000 square feet and take over two floors at Hong Kong’s iconic Landmark Chater. Designed by Rotterdam-based architecture firm MVRDV, Sotheby’s Maison will showcase the company’s full suite of experiences and offerings, including seasonal exhibitions and a cafe.

With Sotheby’s Maison, the company continues to push the boundaries of what’s expected from an auction house. In addition to its namesake auctions, Sotheby’s will host intimate exhibition tours, expert-led masterclasses, and other cultural events as part of its planned public programming. More on Sotheby’s programming will be unveiled at the flagship’s grand opening.

“Do not expect a traditional setting of a four-white-wall gallery space,” says Nicolas Chow, Chairman of Sotheby’s Asia. “In tandem with the adventurous, social design approach of MVRDV, our vision is to bring art and luxury closer to communities.”
