Tyrrell Winston Presents 'New Religion, True Religion, Bigger than the Pope' in Allouche Benias Gallery

On view from June 17 – July 22.

Opening this Saturday, Tyrrell Winston will be presenting his New Religion, True Religion, Better than the Pope solo exhibition at the Allouche Benias Gallery in Athens.

The name of the show is partially inspired by a L’Equipe newspaper article from 1997. In that particular issue, the newspaper had declared Michael Jordan “bigger than the Pope” during the Chicago Bulls’ pre-season exhibition game in Paris. The official press release for the show notes that “Today, sports and celebrities are the new religions, and athletes and personalities are the new gods. Immortality seems more tangible than ever, so whose accomplishments will be remembered tomorrow?”

Aside from the latest iterations of Winston’s signature basketball wall sculptures and calligraphic paintings, the artist also prepared a few surprises to commemorate his first-ever show in Greece. One of which is his first-ever bronze sculpture that he had teased on his Instagram. Described by Winston as an ode to Marcel Duchamp’s “Bicycle Wheel,” the piece is entitled “Imposter Syndrome” and features a structure of a basketball rim and a stool. Some of the artworks can be previewed above.

In an earlier Hypebeast interview with Winston, the artist teased this exhibition and that it’ll also include “a very special collaboration.” The artist just posted a photo of a patchwork leather jacket, featuring embossings that reference his artworks. Turns out, this is the first preview of Tyrrell Winston and Aimé Leon Dore’s upcoming collaborative collection, which will coincide with the opening of the New Religion, True Religion, Better than the Pope exhibition.
