Para Site Presents ‘Strange Strangers’ Exhibition by Artists Shuyi Cao and Leelee Chan
The joint exhibition features sculptural objects that ruminate on materiality to envision a queer ecology.
Para Site gallery in Hong Kong is showcasing a new exhibition by New York-based Chinese artist Shuyi Cao and Hong Kong artist Leelee Chan. Entitled Strange Strangers, the title of the show harks to the same phrase coined by British philosopher and ecologist Timothy Morton, in which Cao and Chan seek to channel the formative processes of matter to envision a queer ecology, where one may find identity through a collective of beings and approaches.
Curated by Cusson Cheng, each sculpture on view can be equated to fragments into personal and collective histories. For Cao, her objects often materialize through an alchemical approach, as she fuses stoneware, glass and resin to reveal the overlooked or invisible intimacies that occur between an array of networked lifeforms.
Alternatively, Chan’s work focuses on the urban environment, particularly in ancient artifacts, along with natural and industrial materials to explore the social frameworks and patterns beyond an anthropocentric worldview. Despite the differing approaches, the exhibition is united through the exploration of materiality and seeks to guide the visitor through an ever-changing ecology devoid of structure, focal points or classifications.
Strange Strangers will be on view at Para Site in Hong Kong from July 2 to August 13.
