Fondazione Prada Probes Into the Climate Emergency in Latest Research Exhibition

On view in Venice until November.

Like a meteorologist forecasting the weather, art has historically been used as a barometer to anticipate changes in culture. Following several research driven projects on the human brain and anatomy, Fondazione Prada is showcasing a new exhibition that explores weather through the history of visual art, while probing into current global conditions in relation to the climate emergency.

Curated by Dieter Roelstraete and presented in Venice at the historic building of Ca’ Corner della Regina, Everybody Talks About the Weather features over 50 works across two floors, juxtaposing art historical works alongside contemporary pieces — both of which trace how climate and weather shape cultural identities, while chronicling how humanity has responded to meteorological events.

In one installation, New York-based design studio 2×4 worked with the New Institute Center For Environmental Humanities (NICHE) of the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice to fuse scientific insights through an artistic lens. With the weather as a starting point, the project seeks to “highlight the urgency of climate change, establishing an empirical equation between meteorology and climatology, using together the tools of art and science,” said Miuccia Prada, President of Fondazione Prada, in a statement.

“The aim is to frame the environmental crisis and its undeniable impact on our lives through the evocation, representation and analysis of meteorological phenomena. Climate is a global and universal issue, affecting the actions and destinies of women and men in all regions of the world. Talking about the weather today therefore means talking about and worrying about everyone’s future,” she added.

To complement the event, the institution worked with 2×4 to publish a lengthy 448 page book that catalogs the experience, which you can purchase at Fondazione Prada’s webstore for €80 EUR / $87 USD. Meanwhile, for those looking to attend the exhibition, Everybody Talks About the Weather will be on view in Venice until November 26, 2023.
