Transgender Artist David Kim Whittaker Explores Vulnerabilities in Latest Series
Titled ‘The Therapy and the Theatre.’

Opera Gallery in Hong Kong has unveiled select pieces of transgender artist David Kim Whittaker’s Therapy and the Theatre series. These never-before-seen works are part of the artist’s ongoing exploration of vulnerabilities, transcendence, and self-identity. A total of 35 mixed-media pieces make up the series with the artist incorporating diverse materials for each composition including pencil, chinagraph, collage, acrylic, and more. It took nine years for the artist to develop the body of work, starting at the end of 2011 until the start of 2020.
“As the series title suggests, making this work continues to help me to come to terms with the world and my place within it. The paintings have a physicality that could be seen to fall somewhere between the thick undulations of earth and slurry at the foot of a John Constable painting and the unmade sheets and personal spillings of Tracy Emin’s bed,” said Whittaker in a statement.
