More than 200 snow and ice sculptures have been built for the Sapporo Snow Festival, but none as impressive as the massive Star Wars sculpture. Sponsored by Disney, the tribute to the iconic sci-fi franchise features a behemoth Darth Vader among his Stormtrooper minions. The Lucasfilm-approved design is a part of a marketing strategy for the upcoming film set to release this coming December. As per the festival’s tradition, Japanese army troops are in charge of building the spectacles. For this particular piece, the Hokkaido-based 11th brigade of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force was in charge, with work taking a squadron of bulldozers over a month’s time.
