For centuries, tattooing has been practiced across a wide array of religions and subcultures. Often holding its own unique meaning to each respective group and connotating rebellion, tattooing as an “art” has seen a resurgence over the past few decades within mainstream American culture. Despite the dominant trend and increasing mass appeal, tattoos are often times met with a stigma associating them with a stereotype of rebellion or social defiance. Additionally, many other countries, industries and workplaces still put barriers of entry around individuals who have tattoos, effectively perpetuating them as an aesthetic embellishment that may never be fully accepted. Despite the division, the overall trend has seen tattoos become less of an act of insubordination in favor of a means to artistic expression and as a respected art form in its own right. For whatever meaning it may hold for you, we’d like to know – do you have tattoos?
