With the recent explosion of Tumblr and its highly-visual form of interaction, perhaps no other image format has benefitted as much as the GIF. Much maligned in the past, the animated form will be celebrated both online and physically by Tumblr as “Moving the Still: A Festival of GIFS.” The exhibition will be curated by Paddle8 – an online destination for art collectors — along with R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, the Rodarte sisters and author James Frey, among others, and will include a range of selected GIFS across several categories. The images will be showcased at Art Basel Miami Beach in December and the Moving the Still website, through which artists can submit their work from October 17 through November 7.
