Stems Gallery Invites You Into Aryo Toh Djojo's 'Unseen Realities'

A new solo exhibition of paintings on view in Paris.

Los Angeles-based artist Aryo Toh Djojo is showcasing a new solo exhibition entitled Unseen Realities at Stems Gallery‘s Paris location. Toh Djojo is known for creating faded paintings made with an airbrush technique that he uses to make reference to the symbols and observations of his home city.

Heavily inspired by the worlds of science fiction and ’80s blockbuster films, Toh Djojo’s latest series transports audiences to a hazy alternate dimension, filled with vague sunsets, figures teleporting into the cosmos and UFOs, the latter of which has been renamed by authorities as UAPs (unidentified anomalous phenomena) in recent times. When dealing with the uncertainty of the unknown’, Toh Djojo’s airbrush aesthetic lends a somewhat calming veneer to otherwise precarious subject matter, each of which is first rendered using AI software and then laid in acrylic on canvas in a color palette that evokes films, such as E.T. (1982) and Independence Day (1996).

“Intuitively crafting storylines and orientating perspectives, Toh Djojo has set the stage for a projection our own speculative fictions, appointing the audience as director of his sci fi fantasy,” wrote critic Charlotte Norwood. Unseen Realities will be on view in Paris until March 30.
