Damien Hirst Brings ‘The Light That Shines’ Exhibition to Château La Coste

Also the first artist to completely take-over the cultural estate.

Currently on view at the Château La Coste in Provence, France,  is Damien Hirst’s The Light That Shines exhibition. Spanning 500 acres of land, the exhibition takes over the entire Château La Coste with Hirst’s extensive body of work spread across five pavilions.

Over 90 sculptures and paintings are displayed on site, including highly-recognizable pieces as well as artwork like “The Empress Paintings”, which has never been exhibited before. Each area is carefully curated with pieces that befits the environment, thus inviting visitors to an immersive viewing experience. A prime example of this is the placement of the “Natural History” series in the Renzo Piano Pavilion. It’s located on the lower ground floor of the site, so its natural light source fluctuates throughout the day, while its underground setting offers a sense of tranquility as if time has been frozen.

Meanwhile, on the outside, large-scale sculptures are intentionally scattered around the estate. Pieces like the anatomical “Hymn” welcome visitors at the driveway, while the centaur-like “Hylonome” appears to provide direction to the starting point of the exhibition.

The Light That Shines exhibition is currently on view until June 23, 2024. For more information, visit the Château La Coste’s official website.
