'At the Edge of the Sun' Sees LA's Defining Artists Pay Tribute Across Generations
Curated over a decade of creative exchange between the 12 participating artists.
At the Edge of the Sun at Jeffrey Deitch is a collaborative effort by 12 artists rooted in Los Angeles, transcending typical city stereotypes to spotlight personal narratives and community visions. The exhibition, curated over a decade of artistic exchange, showcases influences ranging from underground economies to local histories, presenting a diverse array of works across installation, painting, photography, and sculpture. These artists blend vernacular with industrial techniques, paying homage to inherited skills like hand sign painting and adobe construction while enriching their expressions.
Through regular gatherings, the artists have intricately woven their works, highlighting interconnectedness and fostering collaboration beyond the gallery. They’ve engaged designers, filmmakers, writers, and photographers to expand the exhibition’s impact. Accompanying the showcase is a comprehensive book featuring an introductory essay by Dr. Rose Salseda, alongside interviews and photographs documenting the artists’ journeys.
“With this current exhibition, ever part of it felt really important for us to do ourselves,” said Alfonso Gonzalez Jr. in a statement. “If we’re going to do this, we have to do it a certain way.”
Featured in the exhibition are works by Diana Yesenia Alvarado, Michael Alvarez, Mario Ayala, Karla Ekaterine Canseco, rafa esparza, Alfonso Gonzalez Jr., Ozzie Juarez, Maria Maea, Jaime Muñoz, Guadalupe Rosales, Gabriela Ruiz, and Shizu Saldamando. At the Edge of the Sun embodies not just individual artistic practices but a collective celebration of Los Angeles’ diverse cultural landscape, honoring past legacies while shaping future narratives.
