Todd James Combines Drawing & Painting For the First Time in 'Musical Chairs' Show
Marking his solo debut in Milan at Galleria Patricia Armocida.
Todd James will debut his solo exhibition titled Musical Chairs in Milan’s Galleria Patricia Armocida. The showcase features fifteen never-before-seen artworks, including nine canvases and six gouache paintings on paper. This exhibition serves as a visual link between James’s previous oil stick paintings exhibited in Copenhagen and New York in 2023 and his well-known acrylic canvas works.
The new pieces combine drawing with painting, showcasing the artist’s evolving style. James’s deliberate use of rough oil stick lines contrasts with the smoothness of acrylic color fields, adding depth to the compositions. The artworks revisit familiar themes such as coffee cups, house plants, ashtrays, telephones, cats, and chairs, which have been central to James’s artistic expression for over two decades. These everyday objects convey a sense of silent power and beauty. The interiors depicted in the artworks exude a comforting familiarity, blending seamlessly into James’s imaginative worlds. Musical Chairs marks the first time these new styles and techniques are presented together in James’s oeuvre.
Musical Chairs will be on view from March 5 through May 31 at the address below. Head to Galleria Patricia Armocida’s website for more information and check out more exhibitions here.
