Berlin’s KW Institute Is Showcasing a Retrospective Exhibition on Legendary Artist Martin Wong

The first international extensive display of the artist’s work outside of the United States.

KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin is showcasing a new retrospective exhibition on legendary Chinese-American artist, Martin Wong. Entitled Malicious Mischief, the show unearths Wong’s 30 year exploration into the social, sexual, and political climate of the U.S. from the 1970s to 1990s.

The show is sectioned off into themed rooms. In each, visitors can traverse a visual biography of the artist — from his euphoric poems, paintings and sculptures created in his formative years growing up in Northern California in the ’60s and ’70s, to his cosmic and haunting depictions of New York City made in the decades that followed.

Produced in collaboration with Museo Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo (CA2M), Móstoles, Madrid, Camden Art Centre, London, and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Malicious Mischief is the first international extensive display of the artist’s work outside of the U.S. The exhibition will be on view in Berlin until May 14, 2023.
