WOAW Gallery to Unveil New Space in Singapore

Opening later this month.

Singapore has long been a hub for creativity with a variety of galleries setting up shop in the Southeast Asian city-state. In recent years, Singapore’s position as both a cultural and financial hub has only strengthened due to socio-political shifts in the region, such as an exodus for major corporations — from L’Oréal, LVMH, and VF Corporation — who favor Singapore’s relaxed COVID laws, as opposed to Hong Kong.

2023 is shaping up to be another big year as several more international galleries open new spaces in Singapore, including Lehmann Maupin and WOAW Gallery. Speaking on the latter, WOAW Gallery founder Kevin Poon noted in an interview with ARTnews that “the influx of people in finance, crypto, arts, and culture” is amongst the many reasons for anyone looking “to enter the market and really be one of the few international galleries entering Singapore.”

Historically in the past, many Asian metropolises have been overlooked in favor of Western cities, such as Paris or New York, when it comes to high-profile art fairs, exhibitions and gallery locations. A noticeable shift has steadily taken place, evidenced by the added influx of fairs, such as Frieze Seoul, Art Basel Hong Kong and Singapore’s inaugural ART SG fair, slated for January 12 to 15, that is backed by MCH Group, the force behind Art Basel.

Although the city-state is still relatively young country, having gained its independence in 1965 — the opportunities and room for growth are plentiful. As for WOAW, stay tuned as their new Singapore outpost will open later this month and its opening group exhibition, As Friends & Partners, will feature the likes of Aryo Toh Djojo, Cheung Tsz Hin, En Iwamura, Evgen Čopi Gorišek, Jordy Kerwick, Kang Haoxian, Kila Cheung, Marcela Florido, Soimadou Ibrahim, Stickymonger, and UFO907.
