Check Out These McDonald's Paper Bag Lamps

Lighting sculptures by Seoul-based artist Gyuhan Lee.

After transforming Nike boxes into functional furniture with his “The Pattern Is the Pattern” series, Seoul, South Korea-based artist Gyuhan Lee has returned with his latest playful works. This time around, Lee has upcycled paper bags into lighting sculptures in another exploration of consumer culture.

Dubbed Tokyo Edition: McDonald’s Paper Bag Lamp 12-1 2022 and Tokyo Edition: McDonald’s Paper Bag Lamp 12-2 2022, Gyuhan Lee sourced the familiar paper bags at Narita International Airport during a recent trip to Tokyo.

The iconic brand logo is reinterpreted in the works as a repetitive pattern, rejecting the confining logo form. Additionally, the process created an interesting interaction between the manufactured and artisinal handcrafting. Replicating the effect of Hanji (traditional Korean paper), the recycled paper bag sections are applied to a metal frame to create striking geometric forms that tie together to function as a lamp.

Take a look at Gyuhan Lee’s Tokyo Edition: McDonald’s Paper Bag Lamp 12-1 2022 and Tokyo Edition: McDonald’s Paper Bag Lamp 12-2 2022 lighting sculptures above.
