Supercars Are the Subject of Tatjana Doll’s Latest Exhibition
On view at NANZUKA in Tokyo.
Tatjana Doll is a German artist who paints with a childlike curiosity. Her subjects span everything from road signs and animals, movie scenes and airplanes, to just about anything that crosses her attention. Just like her range of interests, Doll’s painterly style also shifts from boldly graphic compositions to a more expressionist pastiche, such as the work in her latest solo exhibition at NANZUKA.
Housed at the gallery’s 3110NZ by LDH kitchen space, the self-titled show comprises of five enamel and oil paintings depicting a different luxury car — from Bugatti’s Centodieci and La Voiture Noire, the Lamborghini Sian and Veneno, to the Rolls Royce Sweptail – a one-off car valued at $12.8m USD.
As with much of her past work, there lies a deeper socio-political inquiry into each of these supercars — where doll conveys a feeling of unrest, threat, and danger that is evident in the various subtexts of the paintings. Tatjana Doll opened earlier this month and will be on view in Tokyo until September 10.
