Urs Fischer Transformed Marciano Art Foundation Into a Playground of Digital Sculptures

Presented by Gagosian.

Back in December, Urs Fischer debuted a Tiffany & Co.-inspired sculpture as part of his NFT series, CHAOS #1–#501. Not everyone was a fan initially, including Larry Gagosian, who told The Wall Street Journal that he believed the project needed to be explored further before releasing through his gallery.

Fast forward to the present, it may be safe to say that Gagosian will be pleased with how the series has developed. Housed at the newly reopened Marciano Foundation (MAF) in Los Angeles, Fischer is displaying 500 of these unique digital sculptures as three separate sequences of one-to-three-minute videos on a trio of colossal suspended screens.

Sold through MakersPlace, the exhibition marks the first time the digital works will be showcased offline. Each sculpture depicts two disparate objects or materials that the German artist curiously mines to produce an uncanny “collision of things.” At the core of this study is the embracing of decay as a prelude to transformation, where Fischer jumps from art historical motifs to common objects of contemporary life to create art that floats between the real and imagined.

Additionally, a program of “swap meets” and indoor musical performances will be shown throughout the duration of the exhibition. Urs Fischer: CHAOS #1–#501 is on view at MAF until October 29.
