Daniel Arsham Will Partner With Kohler to Present “Divided Layers”

An experiential art installation that will go on view at the upcoming Milan Design Week.

Back in October, Daniel Arsham partnered with Kohler on a limited-edition sink that was made using 3-D clay printing technology. To follow, the American artist will reteam with the manufacturer company to present an experiential art experience at the upcoming Milan Design Week.

Continuing off the success of the Rock.01 sink, “Divided Layers” is a massive site-specific installation that presents a series of stacked panels that are combined to form a walkable tunnel. Housed at the FuoriSalone exhibition, each panel references a single plane of the 3D printed clay that layers together to form Rock.01. Additionally, there will be a pond inside the tunnel that reflects the unique texture of the clay and a cadence to each wall that mimics the flow and movement of the columns within the Palazzo.

“The flow of water is experienced in both negative and positive space, regardless of a form’s ‘function’,” said Arsham in a statement, adding, “In Divided Layers, visitors experience being within the sink, rather than a user of a functional piece.”

To honor Milan Design Week, Kohler has made a donation to Water Mission’s WASH projects in Indonesia, helping to bring safe water and sanitation to up to 10,000 people through 15 projects in 2022. Through impactful products and inspiring partnerships, Kohler’s Believing in Better platform strives to enhance the quality of life for current and future generations through design, craftsmanship, and innovation.

“Divided Layers” will be on view at the Palazzo del Senato (Via Senato 10) daily from 12pm to 10pm from Tuesday, June 7 through Sunday, June 12.
