Zoé Blue M Crafts Rhinestoned Portaits for "Fault Lines" Exhibition

Filled with visual elements that are nod to her multicultural heritage.

Page (NYC) is displaying a selection of new paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Zoé Blue M who is known for her rhinestoned portraits of young female subjects set against intimate environments. Blue’s bold and cartoonish subjects are inspired by a myriad influences, gleaning inspiration from traditional theater, folklore, fashion, and pop culture. Her clash of visual elements are rooted in her multicultural heritage with the artist being of Japanese and French backgrounds.

As part of a presentation called “Fault Lines,” Blue’s works at Page (NYC) continue to shed light on her cross-cultural upbringing, crafting compositions filled with dreamlike symbols the she pulls from her memories as a child growing up in the West Coast. From nods to Japanese architecture to French sewing patterns, intricate details of her individuality are injected across her paintings.

Apart from her cultural background, the artist is also enamored by natural elements which she injects in her surrealist pieces. “Weather plays a central role in Blue’s canvases, from clear blue skies, a heavy downpour, to smoke-filled orange clouds. Mirroring the reality of Los Angeles, fire always seems to be looming, leaving viewers to question whether her tableaus depict scenarios that are on the brink of disaster, or just narrowly avoiding it,” as per a description by Dalya Benor of Page (NYC).
