Rare KAWS Paintings Lead Sotheby's Upcoming New York & Hong Kong Auctions

From the collection of Ryan Brant, who founded ’Grand Theft Auto’ publisher Take-Two.

Sotheby’s will soon launch a series of contemporary art sales featuring the collection of pioneering video game executive, Ryan Brant. The sale was organized by the family of Brant, who passed earlier this year at the age of 49; he was best known for founding Take-Two Interactive, which later led to the formation of Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead creator Rockstar Games.

The first auction titled “Contemporary Curated” will be held in New York City, spotlighting over 25 works by KAWS including signed and numbered tondo paintings by the Brooklyn artist valued upwards of $350,000 USD. The second installment will be hosted in the dealer’s Hong Kong outpost, spotlighting more abstract paintings by KAWS alongside a large oil on canvas piece by Kenny Scharf dubbed ‘Humidungle’ (pre-estimate sale of $109,000 USD). The third sale returns to New York, focusing on interior pieces including the ‘Cartoon’ sofa by acclaimed furniture designers, Fernando and Humberto Campana.
