Tom Sachs Launches Major "Timeline" Retrospective in Germany

Displaying his McDonald’s installation, bricolage objects, and more.

The SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen art museum in Germany recently launched a major retrospective on acclaimed American artist, Tom Sachs. Entitled “Timeline,” the sprawling presentation signals Sachs’ first monumental presentation in the country for over 15 years. A number of large-scale sculptures and bricolage objects are displayed throughout the exhibition rooms of the German institute that chronicle the artist’s decades-long career as a contemporary artist.

Highlights include his life-sized ‘Miffy’ (2008) statue, ‘Hello Kitty Nativity’ (1994) sculptural work, the ’Chanel Guillotine’ mixed-media sculpture, and towering sculptures of the Twin Towers. Moreover, ‘Tea Ceremony’ pieces and NASA-inspired objects are also on display. One of the more eye-catching works is a makeshift McDonalds stand entitled ‘Nutsy’s McDonald’s’ (2001) complete with employee uniforms and a garbage bin to boot. Altogether, Sachs’ artworks “critically questions the value of products and the meaning of existing rituals and ways of life,” described the museum in a statement.

“Timeline” is on view through April 26, 2020. View select works above and the visit SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen’s website to learn more.

In other monumental exhibitions, Henry Chalfant’s photos of legendary graffiti writers will go on display at The Bronx Museum of the Arts.
