Art Basel Ends Abhu Dhabi Summit Demanding $15,000 USD Entrance Fee

A three-day event to address global issues such as sustainability and artificial intelligence.

Art Basel is set to launch its Miami Beach 2019 installment this week, bringing together over 200 gallerists for its annual fair. Apart from the yearly festival, the international organization had plans to kick off a new initiative called Art Basel Inside — a summit conference dedicated to addressing global issues such as sustainability and artificial intelligence.

With this program, the arts-inclined company was aiming to invite industry leaders of science, technology, and finance. However, according to ArtForum, Art Basel decided to cancel the three-day event because of the short timeframe leading up to its launch in February 2020 as well as its pricey admission fee of $15,000 USD per attendant.

“The concept of Art Basel Inside and the building of communities in the art world is something we strongly continue to believe in and that we have been developing over the years,” as per a statement provided to ArtForum. “Art Basel Inside in Abu Dhabi in February 2020 was always an ambitious project on quite a short timeline. Despite a lot of excitement for the project, support from our partners, and incredibly hard work by the team, we were not able to move forward with Art Basel Inside.”

Despite the cancellation, Art Basel Miami Beach 2019 is set to run from December 5-8. Check out our comprehensive guide for art week in the Florida capital here.
