GIPHY Launches World's First Film Festival Dedicated to GIFs

Storytelling in 18 seconds or less.

GIPHY, the major GIF search engine, is throwing the very first GIPHY Film Fest for filmmakers up to the challenge of creating 18 seconds or less short films. According to the rules on GIPHY’s site, creators can submit a maximum of three movies in the narrative, stop-motion, animated, experimental, or wildcard/other categories. Submissions must also be looped, high definition, and in mp4 format with 16:9/1080p resolution. Having sound depends on the creators, but all entrants must be U.S. residents and over 18.

GIPHY spokesperson Tiffany Vazquez told Quartz: “One of the biggest things to come out in recent years is Vine. People were telling stories and entertaining themselves in six seconds. There’s really no reason why filmmakers can’t give us compelling, entertaining, profound art within that amount of time, too.”

The festival will begin on November 8 in New York, and the winner will be awarded $10,000 USD, a five-year Squarespace subscription, and the chance to guest curate an official Spotify playlist. You can submit now to September 27.

In other news, Ryoji Ikeda brought a massive audiovisual installation to Centre Pompidou.
