Man Hospitalized After Falling Into Anish Kapoor's 'Descent Into Limbo' Installation
The 60-year-old museumgoer is reportedly “OK [and] almost ready to return home.”
Despite warning signs and gallery staff surrounding the artwork, a 60-year-old man was recently hospitalized after falling inside Anish Kapoor’s Descent into Limbo (1992) installation at the Serralves museum in Porto, Portugal. A representative for the museum claims that the “visitor is OK [and] almost ready to return home,” reports The Art Newspaper. The hole is approximately 8-feet-deep with its sides painted in the British artist’s trademark Vantablack material — a substance that apparently blocks 99.8 percent of ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light.
The installation is temporarily closed, but the museum notes that it will reopen “in a few days.” Descent into Limbo is one of many works on display at the Serralves museum’s exhibition on Kapoor entitled “Works, Thoughts, Experiments.” The show is on view until January 6, 2019.
