Pop Artist Robert Indiana, Creator of "LOVE Sculpture," Passes Away

At 89 years old.

Famous pop artist Robert Indiana passed away on Saturday night at the age of 89 due to respiratory failure, according to The New York Times.

Indiana was widely known for his popular rendering of the world “LOVE,” in which the the letters “L” and “O” are stacked on top of “V” and “E,” which became one of the most recognizable artworks of the 20th century. His famous sculpture has appeared on everything from T-shirts and totes to CD covers and stamps.

Indiana spent most of his final years in solitude while close friends stated they haven’t heard from him in some time. “In some ways he was perhaps seen as the proverbial one-hit wonder because ‘LOVE’ was so immensely iconic and immensely huge in pop culture. For better or for worse, it overshadowed some of his other contributions,” said Dan Mills, the director at Bates College Museum of Art in Lewiston, Maine.

The famous “LOVE sculpture” is the current centerpiece of Love Park in Philadelphia.
