Marefumi Komura Opens ‘Big ship’ Exhibition at The Mass

An expression of fragility, impermanence and imperfection

In conjunction with his new “subtraction” series, Japanese visual artist Marefumi Komura recently launched a solo exhibition at The Mass.

Titled Big ship, the exhibition focuses on the on Komura’s new painting set which utilizes a technique that strips away thin washes of color down to lines rather than traditionally building up layers of paint. Big ship came to Komura suddenly after the death of his grandmother and serves as a metaphor for the present state of Japan, seemingly adrift on the sea of globalization. The images highlighted at the exhibition express fragility, impermanence and imperfection while hinting at lost senses, evoking hidden landscapes, and reawakening primal memories.

Check out some choice works from Marefumi Komura’s Big ship exhibition at The Mass going on from now until June 17.
