Micah Spear's Vibrant 'Ø' Series Features Burnt Cash and Julian Klinecewicz Visuals

“The work is not about destroying money…”

New York-based artist and designer Micah Spear — who’s previously worked for the likes of MTV, Facebook and Microsoft on design consulting and brand strategy — has focused his attention exclusively to art, debuting his 2017 work series Ø, which features small-scale resin prisms that encase burnt currency from around the world. Accompanied by a film by Julian Klincewicz — frequent collaborator of Gosha Rubchinskiy, Calvin Klein and Kanye West — that shows the “nature, process and art of fabrication,” Ø comments on themes related to consumerist culture and the social value we place on money and its perceived worth. “The work is not about destroying money; it is about nullifying the contract that binds us all.”

The show is on display at Tokyo’s SO1 art gallery and will also include the series art book: a 48-page cloth bound book featuring film stills, poetry by Joel Morley, photographs by Elizabeth Renstrom and a 7-inch double sided felxi vinyl record with music from Julian Klincewicz’s film.
