Tom Sachs Sends Astronauts to Europa in His Latest "Space Program" Series
On display at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in SF.
Sculptor and filmmaker Tom Sachs takes his Space Program endeavor to Jupiter’s icy moon, Europa, for his latest exhibition at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The large installation displays everything two “astronauts” need in order to complete their voyage, including the Mobile Quarantine Facility, Mission Control and the Apollo-era Landing Exploration Module (LEM).
Space Program: Europa will also include live demonstrations of the flight plan by staged astronauts during the opening and closing weekends, showcasing the rituals and procedures of their mission such as the export of chanoyu or Japanese tea ceremony. The exhibit will be on display now until Jan. 15, 2017. Take a look at Sachs’s next frontier of space exploration in the video above and hear his thoughts on bringing functionalism to art.
