Haruo Mikami's Photographic Vision of Oscar Niemeyer's Brasilia

In stunning and solemn monochrome.

When Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer was tasked with helping build the planned city and capital of Brazil, he succeeded with flying colors; his works in Brasilia catapulted him into the pantheon of the architectural elite, alongside contemporary influence Le Corbusier. But Niemeyer’s structures stand on their own (no pun intended), with strong brutalist lines and waves of concrete. Photographer Haruo Mikami presents some of Niemeyer’s greatest hits, including the Cathedral of Brasilia, the National Congress, and the Ministry of Justice, in stunning monochromatic photography. View the gallery above and for more captured wonders, check out this restored photography series showcasing the Antarctic Shackleton Expedition.
