Coming up this weekend is the opening of Paul Chan‘s “OFF SAFETY” photo exhibition at Slow Culture Gallery, an independent gallery in Northeast Los Angeles. The idea behind “OFF SAFETY” stems from the concept of being ready to shoot and capture unforeseen moments. The exhibition will feature shots of well-known rappers which include the likes of Cam’ron, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Wu-Tang Clan, Busta Rhymes, Eminem, Birdman, Lil Wayne and the Hot Boys. The photos were shot while Chan was snapping editorial shoots for Kronick magazine while he served as Art Director and photographer there during 1997-2003. The extra unused film from those decade-old film rolls are what make the notion of this exhibit: a collection of candid shots — some never-before-seen — of some of the forefront of today’s hip-hop music industry. All shot with film, the exhibit has a documentary-styled aesthetic that gives a unique perspective of the pre-Internet, ‘Shiny Suit’ era days, and when hip-hop artists were just starting to trickle into mainstream consciousness for the first time. These candid moments serve as good contrast by showing a more intimate state of these artists rather than the hyper-masculine and gangster images of these rappers’ public face and their portrayal in the media.
