Hiroki Nakamura‘s “Dissertation on a Man with No Country” for Fall/Winter 2012 was a natural extension of his obsessions with authenticity and freedom. At the heart of the nomadic, Native American-inspired visvim collection was the teepee, a structure that embodies in one form the designer’s twin fixations. To symbolize the return to freedom, Nakamura recently built a 10-foot teepee, hand-stitched and constructed with 10 buffalo hides. Using traditional techniques taught to him by a Montana scholar – one of only two living artisans of tepee construction — the designer’s effort will be displayed at Dover Street Market as a window installation for London Fashion Week.
