Summary

  • In the next act of their longstanding Focus partnership, Stone Island and Frieze tapped Jamal Cyrus to design a limited-edition T-shirt collection for the upcoming Los Angeles art fair
  • The collection comprises of two designs: one sported by staff, and the other available for purchase at the Santa Monica Airport during the fair’s run and the Stone Island La Brea store

Frieze Los Angeles is in the air, and building on its creative alliance with the mega art fair group, Stone Island returns as the official partner of Focus, the on-site platform dedicated to championing emerging galleries.

Following a stellar run of staff uniforms designed by the sections featured names, Frieze and Stone Island have enlisted Houston-based artist Jamal Cyrus for its first, limited-edition T-shirt collaboration.

The garment-dyed tee reimagines Cyrus 2025 work, “Archipelagos in a Negro Spiritual,” into a wearable, digital print complete with a raised finish, channeling the piece’s raw tactility. Made of bleached denim, cotton thread and batting, burlap and barnacles, the artwork, and Cyrus sartorial touch, expands on the material dialogue in his solo presentation with Chicagos PATRON at the upcoming Focus section.

Known for his innovative use of collage and assemblage, the artist has recently taken up denim as a main artistic mode, “[using] the materials and format of the quilt to document aspects of black political history,” he noted. The PATRON showcase will debut a new suite of works made of denim and musical instruments, exploring narratives of power, cultural memory and identity through everyday objects layered with meaning and purpose.

Much like the recent Hasani Sahlehe and Nat Faulkner uniforms at Frieze London and New York, the Jamal Cyrus Stone Island and Frieze T-shirt collection will be available for purchase at the Publications & Merch shop at the Santa Monica Airport and Stone Islands La Brea store while supplies last.

Frieze Los Angeles runs from February 26 through March 1. Visit the fairs official website for more details.
