  • The exhibition will kick off on September 17 at NYC’s Flag Art Foundation

Ana Benaroya ushers in a vibrant collection of figurations as part of an upcoming solo exhibition called Eternal Flame at New York City’s Flag Art Foundation. Benaroya is known for her surrealist reimagining of feminine bodies across multiple mediums including paintings, works on paper and monotypes.

The new collection of paintings feature a company of ripped women set against colorful backdrops with the artist probing unconventional definitions of femininity in both art historical and contemporary culture contexts. One of the highlights is a painting entitled “Heat Wave” that depicts two towering female figures with sparkly eyes against a thunderous backdrop of warm tones. Another work, called “The Blonde Waterfall,” depicts a closely cropped portrait of a yellow-haired woman holding a rose that matches her hair and done up in an almost realist approach. Feelings of intimacy are imbued with the work’s close depth as viewers are left to wonder the identity of this mysterious woman.

“Benaroya’s exploration of how women’s bodies have been depicted—as both form and idea—has remained the singular focus of her practice. Driven not only by her attention to the long history of representation of women, but also by an attempt to discover whether their bodies can be seen without being sexualized,” described the gallery.

The exhibition will kick off this September 17. Head to the Flag Art Foundation’s website for more information.
