Summary

  • New York-based artist is set to open Myth Information, her fifth solo exhibition at Almine Rech New York in Tribeca, on September 18
  • This latest body of work comes as a sign of the times, with Wise’s subjects awakening from their in-frame realities and searching for hope in the powers above

Each of Chloe Wise‘s canvases house a universe of their own. Her subjects, presented in close captures and kaleidoscopic washes, carry an air of blissful ignorance, seemingly unaware of the world that lies beyond their. It’s a kind of innocence that haunts, the kind that Gideon Jacobs describes as watching horror movie characters plan a “fun adventure” in the woods, knowing what awaits just beyond the treeline.

In Myth Information, her latest body of work set to open at Almine Rech in Tribeca, Wise shifts gears. Characters here are no longer untouched by reality, and instead, step into an “Act Two,” an awakening to the confines of their world and the vast, ungraspable void that presses in.

Pulling from the usual art historical suspects, like Caravaggio and El Grecco, filter through a Spielbergian cinematic sensibility, the upcoming exhibition turns our attention skyward. In a time marked by “collapse and crisis,” it feels fitting that we, much like these subjects, gaze towards the “celestial unknown,” as Wise calls it, searching for something higher when the ground below becomes too unstable to stand.

Myth Information will be on view from September 18 through October 25.
