Hauser & Wirth to Open New Palo Alto Gallery in 2026

With its eyes on the region’s collectors, the mega-gallery bets big on NorCal.

  • Swiss mega-gallery Hauser & Wirth has just announced the opening of a new gallery in Palo Alto, California
  • Set to open in spring 2026, the announcement comes unexpected, following the shuttering of fellow gallery heavyweights Gagosian and Pace’s Bay Area locations

Hauser & Wirth is expanding its West Coast foothold with a new gallery in Palo Alto, California, set to open in spring 2026. The space will mark the 18th location from the Swiss powerhouse worldwide, and the third in the Golden State, joining its outposts in Downtown Los Angeles and West Hollywood.

The forthcoming space will occupy a historic post office in downtown Palo Alto. Reflecting the architectural charm of early 1900s Bay Area, the corner complex features expansive street-level windows, 2,600 square feet of exhibition space, along with an in-house bookshop. The gallery tapped architect and longtime collaborator Luis Laplace to helm the renovation.

“Northern California occupies an equally powerful position as home to a fantastically dedicated community of collectors and the museums they have built,” said Hauser & Wirth President Marc Payot. “Perched in its prime spot on the edge of the Pacific Rim and populated by generations of astute and ambitious patrons of the arts, the Bay Area is a place where we are proud to be creating a new space, an energy center for our artists and the community.”

It’s a bold re-entry into NorCal, a region that hasn’t hosted a mega-gallery since the closing of Gagosian and Pace in 2020 and 2022 respectively. Still, Hauser & Wirth appears ready to re-engage with Bay Area scene head-on.

Stay tuned for more details.
