For his debut solo, the London-based artist captures the humor and contradictions that make a nation.
Summary
- British artist Reuben Dangoor unveils This Lime Green and Pleasant Land in London
- The showcase features a range of paintings, sculptures and art objects that explore contemporary British identity through play and humor
Reuben Dangoor, the London-based artist remixing modern British culture, is stepping into the solo spotlight for the first time with This Lime Green and Pleasant Land, running until November 23. A cheeky riff on William Blake’s famed words on the English landscape, the showcase trades pastoral serenity for contemporary chaos, perhaps best embodied by Lime bikes littered across an otherwise idyllic countryside.
Gathering new works and archival favorites, the exhibition takes a tour through the nation, guided by Dangoor’s tongue-in-cheek gaze. Rich oil paintings of Grime icons, multi-medium odes to the art of sport and nods to car culture sit comfortably beside quaint Lost Mary cottages and playful spins on still life, each capturing the humor and contradiction that carve out the contours of a quintessentially British identity.
“Art is for everyone, but sometimes it doesn’t feel like it,” Dangoor told Hypebeast. “I just wanted the vibe to feel open – whoever can come by is welcome and hopefully find something they are into.” In addition to the physical presentation, the artist will be hosting a series of events and workshops, including a Salomon-backed run club on each night of the show’s run.
“I think there is sometimes a feeling that galleries can feel stale and I wanted to keep some life in the space even after the opening night. It’s really nice to invite people into my world not just as observers, but actually taking part and hopefully enjoying themselves.”
