Slawn and Opake Swing Back Hard in ‘Heroes, Villains and Violence’
For Miami Art Week, the iconoclast duo traces back origin stories in massive, wood-panel works.
Summary
- British artists Slawn and Opake team up on Heroes, Villains and Violence, an upcoming showcase at The Art of Hip Hop, coinciding with Miami Art Week
- Featuring a range of new works, the artists muse on childhood dreams and future directions
Fresh off their TABOO drop, London’s new iconoclast duo Slawn and Opake are back together for an immersive showcase at Wynwood’s Art of Hip Hop, just in time for Miami Art Week. Running from December 3 through 31, their new exhibition, Heroes, Villains and Violence, pushes deeper into the chaotic, self-mythologizing universe the two have been building together, taking heavy cues from both pop cultural spectacle and personal narrative.
This new suite of collaborative works delve into the artists’s shared fantasy to become real-life superheroes, all while wrestling with histories as self-perceived villains through pasts marked by hardship, violence and addiction. Wood-panel works capture the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Snow White and the Mad Hatter, counterbalanced between Opake’s graphic compositional approach and tear-streaked, cartoonish spray work, a Slawn signature.
Also seen throughout the presentation is a heavy boxing motif, as the two swing towards redemption and take on a new fight: the discipline, intensity and self-reconstruction needed to keep focused, evolve and succeed from here.
