JOOPITER is launching its first-ever standalone tattoo auction, Inked: Tattoos by Contemporary Artists, a commission-based project that explores the body as the ultimate site for art collection. Curated by Sharon Coplan, the auction brings together sixteen globally renowned figures from the worlds of contemporary art, fashion, and design.
Each participating artist, including Derrick Adams, Thom Browne, Jeffrey Gibson, Marilyn Minter, Peter Marino, Mickalene Thomas, and the late Lawrence Weiner, created a limited-edition tattoo design rooted in their signature visual or conceptual practice. The resulting works are described as proposals designed for the skin, blurring the line between a drawing and a permanent piece of wearable art.
The project centers on the reissue of a historic tattoo by the late Lawrence Weiner, which highlights the shared history between tattoos and printmaking, both of which involve transferring a design and navigating the tension between permanence and reproduction. The auction, which features a convergence of contemporary art and collectibility, offers a new way for collectors to inhabit art on their bodies.
Global bidding for the unique designs will be open on JOOPITER.com from October 22 to 31. A full set of the designs will be reserved for an institutional donation, while an individual edition of each work will be auctioned
