Summary
- The Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat has announced an upcoming “King Alphonso” screenprint
- The edition will be available through Pace Prints starting November 5 at 11 AM EDT
The Basquiat family and estate is teaming up with Pace Prints and publisher Flatiron Editions to release a new screenprint, “King Alphonso, 1982-83,” on November 5.
Part of Basquiat’s famed Daros Suite, the original “King Alphonso” was created using acrylic and charcoal on paper. It showcases several hallmarks of his word-image expressionist signature, including schematic abstractions, scribbling text and a three-pronged crown resting atop one of his iconic head motifs.
The title and eponymous label alludes to a string of Spanish monarchs, namely King Alphonso XIII, the last ruling monarch of Spain, reflecting Basquiat’s exploration constructed cultural heritage along with themes of race, power, history and identity.
