Jo Dennis' Material Meditations From 'A Glass of Absinthe'

A material-focused collection of works that explore “something already absent or lost.”

Mexico City’s JO-HS Gallery is preparing to a launch an intimate exhibition featuring the visceral works of Jo Dennis. Entitled ‘A Glass of Absinthe,’ the presentation helms a materialistic approach, pulling together a layered collection of abstract and gestural pieces that focus on “something already absent or lost.”

From rough scrawls using marble dust and spray paint on military tents to sharply-shaped fabrics delicately hanging on clothing rails with industrial flair, the artist’s touches are poignant and channel a kaleidoscope of human experiences. “In this way, embodying a temporal and experimental dimension, Dennis’s works become a kind of diary that reflects the complex interplay between physical actions and psychological reactions that shape our existential experience,” said the gallery in a statement.

Throughout the exhibition, Dennis enhances her theme through the materiality of her works that feature everyday objects to invoke meditations on human stories. “Viscerally sensuous and highly evocative, Dennis’s dense, tactile meditations ultimately become embodiments of real-life experiences, embracing a notion of materiality that transcends its direct physical presence to include all the experiential, memorial, and cultural meanings embedded within the painting,” the gallery expressed in a statement.

Jo Dennis’ ‘A Glass of Absinthe’ will be on view from February 4 through March 29 at the address below.
