MCA Chicago Dives into Nicole Eisenman's World

A retrospective featuring roughly 100 pieces.

Exhibitions

Nicole Eisenman‘s retrospective exhibition, What Happened, at MCA Chicago offers a comprehensive overview of the artist’s diverse body of work, spanning from 1992 to the present day. Featuring approximately 100 pieces, the exhibition showcases Eisenman’s versatility across various mediums, including painting, drawing, murals, and installations. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of cultural and historical influences such as Renaissance art, underground comics, and socialist murals, Eisenman tackles contemporary crises with her unique style and vision.

The retrospective traces Eisenman’s artistic evolution, starting with her early murals and drawing installations from New York’s 1990s art scene and culminating in her recent large vertical paintings addressing pressing political and social issues. Despite the changing cultural landscape over the years, Eisenman’s commitment to resistance, community and humor remains a consistent thread throughout her work.

Organized by Museum Brandhorst and Whitechapel Gallery, London, and curated by Monika Bayer-Wermuth and Mark Godfrey, the exhibition is now presented at MCA Chicago. Curated by Jadine Collingwood and Jack Schneider, the MCA presentation offers audiences a unique opportunity to delve into Eisenman’s captivating artistic journey.

The exhibition is on view through September 22, 2024. Visit MCA Chicago’s website for more information.
