Julian Pace to Auction His ‘Beloved Artifacts’ at Sotheby’s

Opening at its Beverly Hills location on April 30.

Los Angeles-based artist Julian Pace will host a new auction-exhibition of paper-based works at Sotheby’s Beverly Hills location. Beloved Artifacts examines sports outside the confines of stats and accolades, paying special emphasis on the colors and silhouettes of iconic kits, performance gear and the players who once donned them.

David Beckham in that ’90s Umbro England away kit. A young Cristiano Ronaldo donning the Vodafone era United strip. Zizou, France ‘98. Pace reimagines football royalty with exaggerated bodily features that stresses the garments, and by extension the communities they represent, more than the players in the clothing. “I look at art as a way of observation,” Pace previously told Hypeart. “I think it’s one of the best ways to observe things because it forces you to focus,” noting that beauty can be found in virtually any object, be it mundane or extraordinary.

Additional standouts within the exhibition include a large-scale drawing of Mexican footballer Luis Roberto Alves, with chest outstretched to show the brilliance of his Umbro Aztec-inspired home shirt, as well as a detailed reinterpretation of adidas’ legendary Predator boot. Julian Pace: Beloved Artifacts will be on view from April 30 to May 17 at Sotheby’s Beverly Hills outpost.
